Walmart is giving customers whose Zelda Switch 2 pre-orders were cancelled 48 hours to reserve the console again, Kotaku reported. The retailer is also sending an eGift card worth the console's original price.
The offer arrives by email, sent to the address used for the original pre-order. It comes from Walmart customer service and describes the cancellations as an error.
How the Reservation Works
Affected customers should find an item called an exclusive reservation in their Walmart cart. Checking out locks in the console. The email says the reservation must be claimed within 48 hours, so there is little room to wait.
The eGift card is separate from the reservation. It is worth $519, matching the console's original price, and is meant as compensation for the inconvenience. Kotaku notes it can go toward anything, including a Zelda Pro Controller.
What Went Wrong With the Pre-Orders
The cancellations hit a day before the consoles were due on October 29. Shattered reported that buyers of the Nintendo Switch 2 The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition, which lists at $519.99, were told their delivery order was out of stock.
Kotaku added that past Walmart customers on Reddit described cancelled pre-orders as routine for the retailer. After the cancellations, the console appeared on Walmart's site at $700, nearly $200 above the bundle's original listing.
That price may come from a third-party seller using Walmart's marketplace.
Stock Problems Ahead of the Remake
On launch day, Kotaku writer Kenneth Shepard wrote that the situation had worsened. Stores were reportedly telling workers to expect delays and missing stock in the days before the Ocarina of Time remake. A redditor had posted an internal memo to that effect.
The console does not include the remake, which launches November 5, so buyers need to purchase the game separately. Walmart is not the only retailer with trouble. Our earlier report covered the Target delays alongside the Walmart cancellations.
Shattered's rundown lists Target restocks on November 5 in US stores and November 6 online. It also lists Best Buy midnight launch events on November 5.
