September 2026 PlayStation Plus Essential Games to Download

Four games this month, and no two of them play nice together. Two of the four, Sniper Elite: Resistance and Wobbly Life, run on both PS4 and PS5. Sniper Elite: Resistance doesn’t support cross-save, so pick a platform and stick with it there or you’ll lose your progress switching later; Wobbly Life’s cross-save support isn’t clearly confirmed, so verify in-game before switching platforms.

MLB The Show 26 is PS5 only, and it’s the most feature-packed of the bunch. Chained Echoes, one of the best JRPGs of the last few years, is stuck on PS4. Here’s what’s actually worth your time, and what order to download them in.

The September 2026 Lineup at a Glance

Before getting into each game, the platform split matters:

All four games are included at every subscription tier: Essential, Extra, and Premium. There’s no need to upgrade to claim any of them this month. For reference, Essential runs $10.99 a month or $79.99 a year, while Extra and Premium cost $16.99 and $19.99 a month ($134.99 and $159.99 annually) respectively.

The August 2026 lineup (Dying Light 2 Stay Human: Reloaded Edition, Big Walk, and Signalis) expired on August 31, making September 1 the cutover date.

1. Sniper Elite: Resistance

Reception has been solid rather than spectacular. Reviewers have praised the sniping mechanics and the Axis Invasion mode while noting the campaign plays it safe compared to the series’ best entries.

The mode count is what makes this one genuinely multi-session. There’s full campaign co-op, a Survival mode for up to four players against enemy waves, and competitive 16-player online battles where players earn XP, medals, and ribbons. The standout is Axis Invasion, where another player can drop into your campaign as an enemy Axis sniper, a tense asymmetric wrinkle the series has used before, but one that works especially well here.

Trophy hunters should note the platinum requires two full playthroughs, including one on the hardest difficulty. Online trophies are relatively painless at one to two hours, and the base game carries 54 trophies. Additional DLC packs with extra trophies aren’t included for free.

2. MLB The Show 26

The sports sim is the most feature-rich game in the lineup by some distance, and the most PS5-specific. MLB The Show 26 is developed by San Diego Studio, Sony’s longtime baseball studio. Two new gameplay systems define the on-field experience this year: Bear Down Pitching and Big Zone Hitting. Diamond Dynasty, the card-collecting mode, introduces a new Red Diamond player rarity tier alongside card series tied to the World Baseball Classic, the 2026 All-Star Game, and the Pipeline Series.

Road To The Show received a meaningful structural expansion, now featuring 19 total selectable colleges and full integration of the NCAA Men’s College World Series, with 11 additional new college teams compared to the previous entry. The mode also includes an expanded amateur high school setup as part of career progression: the career arc now stretches further back before the pro pathway begins.

PS Plus members also receive exclusive access to the Jump Start Bundle between September 1 and October 6, which unlocks 5 The Show Packs, 1 Equipment Pack, and the Jumpstart Choice Pack.

3. Wobbly Life

Wobbly Life is the wild card. A physics-based open-world sandbox, it supports up to four players in online or local split-screen co-op and features over 40 jobs, pizza delivery, firefighting, taxi driver, and disco dancer among them, each with its own challenge structure. 

The game comes from indie studio RubberBandGames. The Arcade mode adds Hide & Seek, Trash Zone, Wobble Run, and Sandbox as discrete game modes within the broader package.

For trophy hunters, the base game has 44 trophies and the platinum runs roughly 12 to 15 hours. The DLC trophies are free, bringing the total to 69 trophies across the full package, though completing everything will take closer to 50 hours. Wobbly Life is available on both PS4 and PS5, though it’s worth checking in-game whether your save carries over before switching consoles.

This is the kind of game that reads poorly in a lineup announcement and plays better than expected with the right group, which, given the local split-screen option, is genuinely accessible without a second PS Plus subscription for a household.

4. Chained Echoes

The fourth game is PS4 only, and the one most likely to be slept on. Chained Echoes is a single-player JRPG set on the continent of Valandis, built around a war between three kingdoms, with a visual style described as 16-bit Golden Era and a world where dragons and piloted mechanical suits coexist.

Developed by Umami Tiger, the solo studio led by Matthias Linda, it arrived on other platforms in 2022 to strong critical reception, frequently praised as one of the stronger modern throwbacks to 16-bit-era JRPGs, before this PS Plus inclusion.

The platinum is the most accessible in the lineup: 38 trophies, no DLC, no online requirements, nothing missable, and estimated at 25 to 30 hours with accessibility options that can shorten the grind. For JRPG fans who missed it on other platforms, this is the clearest win in September’s lineup, offering the deepest single-player experience of the four for the least amount of time invested.

What’s Leaving PS Plus in September

Several titles exit the service on September 15, 2026, alongside this month’s new arrivals.

How the Lineup Landed

Reader reaction was mixed. In a subscriber poll following the September 1 launch, 33% of respondents rated it a “crap selection,” while 25% were at least somewhat positive. A four-game month is unusual enough structurally, but the platform fragmentation, one PS5 exclusive, one PS4 exclusive, two cross-gen titles with murky cross-save support, creates practical friction that likely drove some of the negative sentiment.

Sniper Elite: Resistance leading the preference poll makes sense given its mode depth and co-op options. MLB The Show 26 is the most commercially significant inclusion but requires PS5 and a willingness to engage with its layered systems. Chained Echoes is the strongest pick for solo players who care about story. Wobbly Life is for households.

What to Download First

If you’re on PS5 and have any interest in sports games, MLB The Show 26 is the clearest full-retail equivalent in the lineup. If co-op or competitive multiplayer is the priority, Sniper Elite: Resistance covers the most ground. Chained Echoes is the right call for solo JRPG fans on either console.
